Let's Talk: FOMO

Matt Campbell considered the modern phenomenon of FOMO – the fear of missing out. Many young people today are constantly worried that they are missing out on the best experiences in life. This can be fuelled through seeing a constant stream of photos on social media of friends and acquaintances who seem to be having an amazing time.
We read from Ecclesiastes chapters 1 and 2 as Matt explained that FOMO is just the latest version of the age-old pursuit of seeking something that will truly satisfy us. The passage we read explains how King Solomon investigated this in a way that no one has done before or since. We looked at his pursuit and his problem.
The Pursuit
King Solomon explored different routes in the world to happiness and satisfaction:
- Education and knowledge
- Pleasure
- Achievement
- Possessions
- Wives and concubines
Ecclesiastes 2:10 says that Solomon denied himself nothing: “whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them”.
The Problem
King Solomon found the same outcome for each of these avenues of pleasure: “all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 2:11). After trying all these things he discovered they were meaningless. We are being lied to by our culture that these things will satisfy us.
Matt taught us that one of the keys to understanding the book of Ecclesiastes is the phrase “under the sun”. Life is meaningless if we only consider what is “under the sun” – so don’t live your life for things “under the sun”. Instead live your life for the God who is above the sun. Follow Jesus and be a citizen of heaven. You’ll still live in a fallen world but you will have the hope of an eternity in a better place. Don’t neglect the one thing that is most important. The God who created you wants to have a relationship with you through his Son the Lord Jesus Christ.
